the non-scene

Last night marked the grand opening of Vanguard. I had been inside the space formerly known as Qtopia over the last couple of weeks, as Steve's band is recording next door at West Beach. It's amazing what they've done with the place! And the zen patio complete with giant Buddha outside - you better believe I gave that belly a good luck rub! The highlight of the night, however, was the sushi bar courtesy of Sushi Roku. Mmmmmmm...

VHS or Beta played, and so did another guy whose name I don't remember. I didn't see him anyway. And there were acrobats/trapeze artists and magicians! I was surprised to discover that the DJ was Adam 12 - he played a flawless set! I was never a huge fan of what he selected during his tenure at Block Party, so it was awesome to see his range. The coolest part of the night, however, was the people in attendance. Tastemakers and trendsetters, members of hot bands, and people who party for reasons other than to get their weekly quota of Cobrasnake shots.

The Hollywood party scene is an ever-evolving creature, and I daresay that it was refreshing to see that an awesome party could be thrown by people other than the same old 4-5 dudes we've all come to follow. Time for the next generation!

The Weekends are heating up!

We had a great start to the weekend with our launch party last night - including an appearance by Lucy Liu in a Morphine Generation blazer. HOT! To everyone who made it out, thanks for making it a great night! To those who overslept - your loss. :P

Typically I would elect to stay in on the weekend. I hate all the nighttime traffic, cops cruising the "boulevards," and the weekend warriors. Honestly, it can be an unsavory scene. But things are changing this week! There are two great parties going on in Hollywood tonight (and every Friday hereafter), so if you're in town, check them out:

Apollo Starr has a new bash at Beauty Bar:

And the Vine Bar is renovated and reopening, so Pash is back:

If you see me out, say hi!

Hang the DJ!

If that name weren't already in use by a club out here, I would cerainly consider changing the name of HABIT. UGH! We've been having some great parties, don't get me wrong, but every so often one of the DJs (mostly just one) goes and plays some shit that has me or one of my fellow party throwers running to the DJ stand in a panic. Or just leaving our own party early out of frustration. Totally sucks. But we're reigning it in - I hate to be a hard-ass, but I'm good at it when I have to. And BOY do I have to!

That aside, we have some awesome parties coming up!!! Last week we celebrated the launch of Volunteers Magazine. Then this week we have a celebration very close to our hearts: Siren Magazine has launched!!!! Next week Koufax will be joining us after their L.A. show for an official afterparty - Rob is doing a DJ set!

I'm kinda wishing that I hadn't been so wrapped up in the last minute design of the magazine, so I could have gone to San Diego's Street Scene. Not only was there a (mostly) awesome line-up, but I could have seen in person the confirmation that Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas is as trashy as they come. That girl was the downfall of a great hip-hop group. Then again, having the pictures of the wet spot is just as good, I guess. Gross!
