Shameless Plays: Mika

I caught this kid's appearance - okay, he's 23 - on Jimmy Kimmel this past week, and now I can't get either of the songs he performed out of my head. He quotes his influences as Prince and David Bowie, but Steve and I swore we were watching the spawn of Freddie Mercury - maybe with a little Elton John and younger George Michael mixed in. I'm not one to fall for cheesy pop... okay, yeah I am... but Mika is a superstar, and if you haven't caught on yet (maybe you heard Love Today on Verizon Wireless commercials), you have to do yourself the favor of downloading Grace Kelly or Lollipop.

Shameless Reports: Bowie Curates H&M's High Line Festival

As I recovered from SXSW, while both looking forward to and dreading the approaching 3-day Coachella, glad to be skipping it's new country cousin the Stagecoach Festival, considering making plans to attend Lollapalooza and CMJ this fall, wondering if my boyfriend's band will play Sunset Junction this August, or if they'd pursue Fuck Yeah Fest, the Silverlake Music Fest, or Arthur Fest instead, concerning myself with coverage for the magazine of Bumbershoot and VooDoo Music Experience, avoiding all discussion of Bonnaroo (dirty hippies), and making plans to go out tonight with my girlfriend with close ties to Warped Tour and Taste of Chaos, I found myself thinking: we really need more music festivals in this country.

My wish has been granted, and as much as I love David Bowie, I kinda' couldn't care less. Aside from the fact that the festival is a tedious 10 days long!, the amazing Mr. Bowie isn't even performing himself. But if you care more, you can check out the 411 on yahoo.com or the festival's official site.

Shameless Reports: Modest Mouse Debut Was Not So Modest

In fact, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is #1 according to Billboard earlier today! Not bad, and especially exciting following The Shins' #2 debut of Wincing the Night Away (curse you, Chingy! Or was it Akon?...). For better or worse, Indie Rock is finally following in the footsteps of its grandpa, Alternative Rock.

Happy Birthday Elton John!

Can you believe the guy is 60?!?! I don't know how old I thought he was - I never really thought about it - but I wouldn't have guessed 60.

You'll have to read here for a review of his party at Madison Square Garden. We weren't invited, but we'll work on getting a first-hand account by his 75th.

Website Assists in Tour Booking, Guarantees Ticket Sales

Is It possible to book an entire tour online using one website? Audible Spectrum Records' 19 yr. old CEO Dan Gargano says you can. In a recent Music Industry News Network (Mi2N) article the launch of a website providing such services was announced. Though Audible Spectrum has been focusing on booking gigs in the New England area for the past six months, they now have the capabilities to book nationwide shows for interested parties.

There appears to be no direct costs associated with using their services, however they are employing a version of the much despised pay-to-play method by having the bands for whom they book shows take part in ticket presells, which conveniently supports their claim: "We will book bands for you and GUARANTEE a certain number of tickets to be sold to your event."

Shameless Loves: Sushi Zo

In a pond full of great (and not-so-great) sushi spots, Sushi Zo is the big fish. There's no fooling around here, so if you're a california roller, don't even bother. But if you enjoy the freshest of sushi and sashimi this is the place for you. We highly recommend the Omakase!
